About the producer
The Long Miles Coffee Project is the culmination of Ben and Kristy Carlson's vision. In 2011, they moved to Burundi with a straightforward goal: to assist coffee roasters in acquiring consistently exceptional Burundi coffees, thereby empowering local growers. Their initial venture with fifty farmers in 2013 has blossomed into a partnership with over 5,500 today.
Gishubi lies just a stone's throw away from Burundi’s ancient and only indigenous forest, The Kibira Forest. The cool mist from the Kibira breathes life into the coffee trees of Gishubi each day. This slightly cooler, unique micro-climate allows the coffee cherries of Gishubi to grow and mature at a slower pace, imparting a distinctive flavor to each cup.
Yet, the hill's closeness to the forest has a darker side. During times of conflict, it transforms into a theater of war. Armed groups have often hidden in the forest and forcefully collected people’s possessions, crops, and livestock.
During conflict, farmers have no choice but to abandon their fields and children cannot go to school.
Gishubi sits at 2,200 MASL and hosts 291 farmers that partner with Long Miles. Together, they cultivate 14,657 coffee trees.
